Fold Four, the graphic design studio of Roy Brooks in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, designs illustrated books for institutions large and small.

Brooks studied graphic design at North Carolina State University and began his career in the Publications Department at the Whitney Museum of American Art, followed by a formative chapter at the international design consultancy Pentagram. He founded Fold Four in 2005, and the studio continues to work primarily with clients in the cultural sector, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Princeton University Press.

Beyond design, Brooks builds furniture using hand tools and traditional joinery—methods that demand planning, precision, and patience. In contrast, he makes visual art and music that are more improvisational and intuitive, including the recording projects The Minor Plus and Annual Rings. He also hosts Resonant Space, an unscripted online radio show that dwells in quiet, spacious, and exploratory music.

Together, these pursuits shape how he thinks and works. Fold Four reflects this multidimensional ethos through a thoughtful approach to design, rooted in tactility, detail, and craft.
