Karl Wirsum:
Winsome Works(some)

THE CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER

In keeping with the playful mood of the artist Karl Wirsum’s work, a 'z-fold' cover scheme creates two books in one. Single color uncoated pages feature an essay and other text matter, while larger, coated sheets highlight the full color artwork. The die-cut angle across the top edge of the cover was determined specifically by the inherent twelve and a half degree slant found in the italic font used for the title treatment. As a result of the folding scheme and this angled cut, the space featuring the title resembles a red pennant — an apt reference to much of the artist's inspiration and subject matter, such as circuses and sporting events.
