| Vincent van Gogh: The Starry Night THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The following descriptions pertain to the alternate proposals featured below: 1. "Color" This direction stems from the author's description of Starry Night's formal qualities and his assertion that "colour...was the crux." He goes on to describe the evocative use of blue, as contrasted with "sharp citron yellows and arresting orange accents." In response, the color palette for the text elements emphasizes this effect with a cyan-printed essay, and a vivid orange for captions, folios, etc. 2. "Horizon" An horizon line is a defining characteristic that all landscapes share. Such an horizon line is suggested in this scheme, as the text columns are the same height across a given spread. The height of the columns is dictated by the size of the images, which are aligned along their bottom edges and consistently placed in relation to the implied horizon. Folios are placed alongside the first line of text and thus move up and down the page depending on the column height, while captions are hung consistently from the top of page. 3. "Infinity" This direction stems from the night sky's evocation of infinitude. Vertical strips of solid black extend into the gutter of the book which, coupled with the binding, suggests such a limitless zone. These black strips extend as backgrounds behind the artwork, while the white zone of the page is reserved for the essay text. Footnotes follow the text and are rotated and knocked out of the black background. |
