| Rob Fischer WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART This booklet accompanied the exhibition ‘Rob Fischer’ at the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria. The curator of the exhibition wanted to emphasize the rich materiality of the work without resorting to the use of overtly recycled papers or vernacular typographic treatments. Rather, she wanted to emphasize the ‘poetry’ of those materials and objects, and the tension between the abstract and elegant. In response, and in keeping with the modest budget, the photographs of the installation were relegated to an 8 page gate fold cover. To emphasize the work’s defiance of easy categorization, the folds of the cover were ignored when positioning the photographs. The structure of the text columns is a reference to the centerpiece of the installation, “Your vigor for life appalls me,“ a hulking tower that commanded the exhibition space. As opposed to indenting the first lines, the paragraphs alternate between left and right indents of the entire block, yielding graphic shapes that resemble the stacked tower. |
